As you stop down the aperture, light reaching the film must enter the lens
closer to its axis.  So, if you have a flash just above the camera on its
shoe, and have a red retinal reflection back, it would normally be lower
than the lens axis.  If some of that reflection strikes the lower edge of
the lens and you are stopped wide open, it will make it to the film.  If
you are stopped down, it might not, depending on how close to the lens axis
it gets.

I think the effect may be marginal as the physical distance from axis to
edge isn't that far, but in a dark room and alcohol consumption (which
dilates pupils), and a close subject, it might be enough to make a
difference between some and none.
