My black Spotty is in a funk over this. If you want to handle a camera that
feels truly solid - Leica M3. Not light. Nothing gets even close - the damn
thing feels like it's a solid lump of metal and all moving parts are smooth
as silk and near silent. I want another one someday.
No SLR comes close but rangies have their limits. The Spotmatic is very
simple, very solid. The original design is late fifties (like the M3). But
heavy.
Pick up an OM1 after these and it feels flimsy (Yes, I know it isn't!) The
Spotty isn't easy to use by today's standards - stop-down metering, slow
lens changes. But the Takumar lenses, especially the later
super-multi-coated ones (sound familiar?) are excellent and can be found
very cheaply. I have a 24/3.5 ($55), 50/1.4 MC($40), 85/1.9($70), 135/3.5
MC($25) and 200/4 MC($10!), bellows ($20) plus the black body cost $110
with a service. Can't beat that and they can be repaired easily, anywhere.
Love it.
Andrew
