Appraisers who buy what they appraise are unfortunately in a technical
conflict of interest. But it often happens. You can negotiate up front
that your appraisals on items you might be interested in can be subject
to second opinion. You can also negotiate up front a discount on
anything you want to pay, perhaps in lieu of cash consideration for your
services. Bartering assets for services is often welcomed by owners.
