The Epic and Epic Zoom 80 are, in a word, flimsy.

To shave a few millimeters on the external dimensions, they've reduced
structural integrity to the bare minimum, cut every corner imaginable,
and mashed the results into an egg-shell-like case.

The Epic is a glorified throw-away - use it 'till it breaks (the gear
pivots are weak, they use metal worms to turn plastic gears that are
bound to wear and fail, etc.), then toss it and get another. And the
Epic Zoom 80 is Olympus' answer to the auto industry's "uni-body
construction". It's built from the film rails out - there's no "body"
to speak of, just sub-assemblies clamped onto a metal plate, held in
place by the cover.

OK, they're relatively inexpensive - Oly can make alot of them, toss out
the ones that don't work, and sell the rest for a pittance and still
make a few yen. If they work past the warranty, they come out ahead. I
know that's the market, but I don't have to like it!

Ah, what I wouldn't give for a _real_ metal camera, like a 35RC, with
the technology of today! Can you imagine!
