There were cases heard of sliding X-brand dedicated flashes onto Canon
bodies and blowing the camera circuits out because the pins on the flash
would touch contacts they were not meant to touch.  The plastic pin retracts
the hot contacts as the flash as it is slid into the shoe, then the plastic
pin goes into the detent and allows the metal pins down to make contact.
