I've found that, for example, fire ants are attracted to neoprene and/or
electricity. It's a constant battle to keep the li'l demons out of outdoor
electrical outlets, switchboxes, breaker/disconnect boxes and even meters.
Sometimes they'll crowd in by the thousands until the sheer mass creates a
short circuit. Sounds incredible, I know, so I'll photograph the next
incident I see. In fact, I suspect our dock lights have been infested since
they keep shutting off after a second or two.
Chances are cameras and lenses have something attractive to bugs. As Arni
quipped, if fungi find lens coatings tasty, perhaps the fungi in turn
attract fungivores!
