I've found that, for example, fire ants are attracted to neoprene and/or electricity. It's a constant battle to keep the li'l demons out of outdoor electrical outlets, switchboxes, breaker/disconnect boxes and even meters. Sometimes they'll crowd in by the thousands until the sheer mass creates a short circuit. Sounds incredible, I know, so I'll photograph the next incident I see. In fact, I suspect our dock lights have been infested since they keep shutting off after a second or two.

Chances are cameras and lenses have something attractive to bugs. As Arni quipped, if fungi find lens coatings tasty, perhaps the fungi in turn attract fungivores!

...I've seen all sorts of "invaders" in cameras - the most
disgusting (so far) being ants...
