The HP Photosmart S20, my former scanner, did an  excellent job with color
negatives on its default settings. The Nikon I presently have does also.

That doesn't mean that some color tuning isn't done. In  fact, I have found
that with almost ALL of my scans, using ANY film, if the image is important
enough some careful color tuning improves the results.

The only film I have consistently had difficulty getting really nice  scans
with has been Kodachrome, and it has been a problem child with both the HP
and Nikon scanners. I understand that the emulsion has  some unique
properties that challenge most scanners. Maybe others do better.
