Ah, yes: balance the light in the highlights until the grease spot
disappears. Do the same for the shadows. Bingo! you have your density
range. Now, calibrate a middle tone with a well-made print, and from now
on, all your enlarging decisions can be made with your enlarging meter. 

It was a JND better than an extinction light meter, and of course
depended as much on your visual experience as on what constituted a
"null" reading.
