I think exposure latitude means to some people the error factor in taking a 
photo. Whereas you can make a 1 1/2 stop error with slide film or a 3 1/2 
stop error in negative film (I don't believe either), you can still get a 
recognizable picture of granny with the kids under the tree or with the 
turkey (apologies to non-Thanksgiving celebraters). 
The latitude of the film (density range) itself is a different matter.
Quoting again from Hamrick/Vuescan: "Slide film maps a density range of 0:2.7 
to an intensity range of 1:500, but negative film maps a smaller density 
range of 0:2.4 to a larger intensity range of 1:4000."
