The problem with any setting other than the flash is 
the camera will calculate the exposure for the existing 
light and use the calculated exposure for the picture. 
The flash is not considered. You have to fiddle with 
the asa setting to avoid overexposure. That's what I'm 
looking for is an easy way to figure the adjustment.

Just to correct one small part of your narrative here: 
the flash will 
fire at f4 if you set the switch to flash.  But you can 
set the 
switch to another aperture after you have selected 
flash.  As Doris 
said, you can then set the flash to Full and work the 
exposure 
(aperture) out with the GN - if you know what that is...
