Almost. Methylated spirits is predominantly ethanol (CH3CH2OH)
containing a small amount (2%?) of methanol (CH3OH). Usually it will
also contain some blue dye and an agent to make it taste bad, as the
methanol causes blindness and brain damage if imbibed.
Usually taken with orange juice whilst sitting wrapped in newspapers on
a park bench. The treatment for methanol poisoning is to administer
ethanol which is a preferential substrate for the metabolic pathway
which leads to toxification of methanol. Ethanol thus block the
metabolism of mthanol, which is instead eliminated in the urine and
exhaled in the breath.
