I understand that gunpowder will ignite if soaked in 100 proof or
stronger spirit. Anything weaker prvents the gunpowder from burning.
This equates to around 50% (?) ethyl alcohol by volume. Incidentally,
as someone explained, meths (metho in Oz) is ethyl aclohol adulterated
with methyl alcohol to avoid its being classed as an alcoholic drink,
thereby avoiding duty. I believe a purple dye is added, together with
ipecacuana (spelling?), which is an emetic to prevent consumption by
those so inclined.
