Alan,
Umax is the big gorilla manufacturer of flatbed scanners. They used to
claim something like half of all flatbed scanners sold. They got into trouble
with false advertising a few years back when HP complained over their
false/inflated claims in a/d bit count. Nikon,Agfa and others have sold Umax
scanners (at a suitable elevated price) under their own labels.
Umax used to get good reviews showing excellent performance for
moderate price. In particular they used to have better color rendition often
a weak point of flatbeds (because of poor spectral characteristics of the
cold cathode lamps). I bought two other brands and returned both of them
before settling on a scsi based UMAX. Look up cnet or ZD net to find reviews
of current models. Get the fastest scan rate unit you can. A slow scanner is
a pain to use. Avoid the parallel port models which are generally cheaper but
slower. We have Hp scanners at work that are good, if expensive.
Some scanners have better depth of field which is useful for
"photographing" small 3d objects. I find this very handy for documenting the
dissembly of cameras or electronic gear.

                  Regards,
                 Tim Hughes
