Some list members may recall a mention of OM pro user Jon Nicholson. Today's
Independent magazine supplement has several pages devoted to his project to
photograph the A1 (the first A-road in England, from London to Edinburgh in
Scotland). The photograph were, for the most part, a little dull. But then a
dual carriageway isn't likely to be 'pretty' is it.

The Guardian newspaper's Weekend supplement has a far more powerful essay
(in b&w) on the continuing story of AIDS in Africa with photographs by
Network mmember Gideon Mendel. I have a lot of time for their picture
editor, Eamonn McCabe, and bought the latter paper.

It's good to see the broadsheets haven't totally abandoned the work of the
'concerned photographer'. I was struck by the placing of lavish adverts for
Kenzo or Yves Saint Laurent perfume opposite photographs of dying patients
or a funeral procession. Some people might call it irony, but at least those
adverts pay for the inclusion of the story.

Jane Bown ("Not again!" I hear you cry) is mentioned in the monthly
newsletter from the Bureau of Freelance Photographers. The writer says "she
is the ultimate observer: her portraits have a simple directness and honesty
not often equalled (except perhaps by her former contemporary at the Sunday
Times, Sally Soames)." And her two OM1s get a mention :-) All this media
attention is because she has a new book published - "Faces: The Creative
Process Behind Great Portraits".
