Perhaps there's two things going on here--a transmission index showing the 
amount of light that's really going throught the lens as measured by the TTL 
meter, and the aperture, which may be just a mathematical calculation of the 
size of the elements. I have some old Modern Photo tests and they do measure 
the aperture.
18/3.5      f/3.51
28/2.8 AF   f/2.89
50/1.2      f/1.26
50/1.4      f/1.44
100/2       f/2.05
180/2       f/2.01

Where does the lost light go? I have no idea but I guess into the internal 
baffles and flocking eventually to be lost as heat I suppose. 

And my Olympus lying to me?  Never.
