: This is a thing which indeed obfuscated things a bit... Either way, I
expect
: this to be correct, so from now on whenever I mount the lens on the
bellows
: I will just use it at infinity when not reversed, and when it is reversed,
I
: will set it to the closest focussing distance.

There is nothing mysterious about this recommendation, and why it is given
for the 50mm macro only. This lens does not only have a close-focus
correction mechanism, it also has a built-in 25mm tube, and the minimum
extension of the bellows is 36mm - larger than the separate 25mm extension
tube which already gives 1:1 when you add it to this lens! So the only way
to get 1:1 and less (0.7x is the minimum) with this lens on the bellows is
use it without its internal extension - at infinity.

When you reverse the lens you should set it at close distance to use the
close focus correction mechanism.

The non-macro standard lenses have no close focus correction mechanism and
therefore should be used at infinity both mounted in normal position and
mounted in reverse.

With any other non-macro, non standard lens you try on the bellows you
should follow the same principles - leave the lens at infinity when it has
no close-focus correction, set it at close distance when it has, like for
instance when using the 85/2, and reverse the lens when you exceed the 1:1
range.
