A standard DIY, field expedient diffuser is a *clean* white linen
handkerchief over the front of the flash.  A single layer provides some
diffusion; two layers even more.  Three layers doesn't seem to gain any
more diffusion but drastically reduces the light.  Rule of thumb for light
loss: about one stop loss per layer (YMMV).

I still keep a handkerchief in the camera bag for this purpose . . . along
with thick rubberband to hold it onto the flash by putting it around the
front edge just behind the window over flash tube and internal reflector.
If you're using a T-20 or T-32 in "Normal Auto," be careful not to let the
excess handkerchief block the sensor in the middle of the "O" in the
"Olympus" logo on the front of the flash.
