HDPE is indeed safe for food contact, however the dyes to color the plastic
may not be safe.  I use Rubbermaid HDPE 32 galon trash cans as primary
fermenters for winemaking.  Rubbermaid lists the white, gray, and yellow
ones as meeting NSF standards for food contact.  Other colors are listed
only for refuse.

OM content:  I've used my OM 2n to photograph winemaking and grape harvests.
