This is a classic 'it depends' answer.  The 'it depends' is how much you
want to spend.  I own the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 and simply love it.
Excellent shadow detail and the highest resolution around.

I print fairly large sizes (many 13x19 -- the largest I can print) and have
done so with both a 2700dpi scanner (almost everything else on the market)
and at 4000dpi (the SS4000) and the difference is really easy to see.

For 8x10 and below, it is a whole different ballgame, there are many, many
excellent choices.
