Gary, you are driving up the price of 50/1.4 ;-) fortunately I have
one with S/N > 1,100,000, but unfortunately it has some cleaning
marks, but it still perform very well. I have went through some
50/1.4s, they were:

Silver nose SC S/N 3xx,xxx poor wide open especially close distance,
fine at F2.8.
Black nose SC S/N 5xx,xxx very good resolution.
Black nose (SC?) S/N 6xx,xxx, resolution between the 3xx and 8xx.
Black nose MC S/N 8xx,xxx not so good as compared to 5xx SC above and
the >1,100,000 that I have.
MC S/N > 1,100,000, resolution similar to 5xx.

The SC 5xx I have is an exceptional one, which is the best 50/1.4 (in
resolution) I have ever seen.

One point I'm not quite sure, seems that starting from 5xx,xxx the
construction of 50/1.4 was not changed (except coating), the different
in performance might be came from the manufacturing, as the production
quantity of 50/1.4 was very high, tooling or fixture might wear and
changed a few times during the whole manufacturing history.
