[OM] [OT] eBay - a curse or a blessing?

Dear All,

As some of you may remember, I live in Jakarta, Indonesia. In practice,
this means that some doors to the market are closed to me, including
eBay (not worth the hassle if you live here). However, with all the
recent posts about sleazy vendors and buyers, I wonder if I'm actually
missing anything worthwhile?

I realise that some experienced list members have developed the
knowledge and skills to find their way safely through the eBay
minefield most of the time; however, others seem to have been less
successful. I hate to hear of bad things happening to Oly list members.

eBay seems to be a trap for the unwary, as do the websites of certain
dealers who've earned shady reputations. As Colonel Jeff Cooper, a
columnist in the US "Guns & Ammo" magazine, once quoted: "One failing
of honourable people is their inability to realise just how
dishonourable some other people can be and how dangerous it is to trust
them." Maybe I'm better off being shielded from the dangers of web
trading?

Regards,

=====
