Before plunking down big bucks on a portable but sturdy tripod, at least
try to get a look at a Tiltall. They're available from B&H for $100 and
that includes a very versitile pan head with reversible column, retractable
spiked feet and one leg that can be used as a monopod. I like my vintage
one so much I'm probably going to get one of the newer ones, and give mine
to a family member. I've talked to some working photojournalists who've
said that back a few years ago, the Tiltalls were considered to be roughly
in the same niche as today's carbon Gitzos. They only weigh 6lbs. and
that's with a pan head that allows verticals. No quick detach plates, but
they are an amazing value in a quality tripod.

In the Bogen/Manfrotto series, the 3021 and similar 3221 represent really
good merging of transportability and stability for 35mm and some medium
format and most spotting scopes. But they must be mated with proper heads
and in the Bogen line those are extra cost, but are interchangeable which
allows much versitility for different needs and situations.

1500mm OM lens. ;-)
