It should be fairly easy to modify your Q310 to take Nicd's safely. I once 
did this with a very old Cannon flash. You just break one of the two wires 
from the battery holder (either one is ok) and add a resistor in series in 
between. The value should be such that it limits the short circuit current to 
what the Alkalines would normally give : about 1.5A.+. A value of 2.7 Ohm 3W 
is thus suitable as the Nicd's have some series resistance to start with. If 
you can't get the 3W value use 6, 0.5 Ohm half watt resistors in series etc. 
The only downside it wastes some battery capacity when using Alkalines.  Also 
the flash may take rather long to charge up as the Nicd voltage is lower than 
an alkaline.
