The front and back coating reflections appear the same when comparing the
two lenses with S/N's over 1,000,000. I must look at their filter ring
inscriptions to tell them apart. My conclusion is both have the same
multi-coating formulation. The coating reflections of these two lenses is
very different from the third one with a S/N _under_ 1,000,000.
Olympus used three different inscriptions for the "Zuiko" markings on the
50/1.4's: "G.Zuiko", "Zuiko MC" and "Zuiko". The inscription on the
1,0##,### reads "Zuiko MC" and the inscription on the 1,1##,### reads "Zuiko".
[Note: At one time Olympus marked the multi-coated lenses with "MC" to
differentiate them from the single-coated lenses. I have several lenses in
different focal lengths marked with "MC". It's my understanding that after
all the lenses became multi-coated, Olympus stopped marking them "MC" as
the marking was not needed any more. I have several more multi-coated
lenses in other focal lengths that are not marked with "MC".]
I just started shooting the same subject material using the 50/1.2 and all
three 50/1.4's with the same film (Kodachrome 64) and camera body
(OM-2S). That roll went out for processing today. I am continuing using
all four lenses on the OM-4 with Ektachrome 100 EPN, but have not finshed
it yet. I want to shoot a variety of subject material indoor and outdoor
with all four lenses.
When all the film is processed I will project the slides onto a 50 inch
white matte screen using a high quality Schneider-Kreuznach lens. If there
is enough difference between them that it would show in practical use, I
should be able to see it when the slides are projected. Among my older
slides, I can easily tell which ones were shot with my 50/1.2 and which
ones were shot with a single-coated 50/1.8 I used to own.
This does not mean Gary Reese would not be able to detect differences
between them with his more scientific methods. He uses a test chart made
from a topographic map, and a rigorous procedure for shooting a lens and
measuring results.
