Chris, if all you ever want to do is test batteries, then a volt meter is not
what you need.  You need a battery tester.  Something that will put the battery
under a load and test the current output capability of the battery.

Simply testing the voltage that a battery can output does not give a true
indication of the life remaining in it.

You may be able to find a simple battery tester at electronic stores, such as
Radio Shack ect.  You can also find digital multimeters that will do a lot more
then just test battery voltage.  They do however cost considerably more then a
simple battery tester.
