The images look perfectly flat when I drop them on the table :-)
Seriously, you can get seasick swinging a 21mm around while looking through
it - it reduces a wide view to a 'rectilinear' image by, in effect,
stretching a curved field of vision to a flat plane. Hence the distortion.
Any super-wide will cause massive distortion if not used appropriately. I
use my 21 for landscapes - anything else and I expect a 'special effect.'
If you mean a 'natural' image, it depends on distance from subject.
Close-ups with a 28mm are distorted but the distortion is not noticeable in
a landscape focussed at infinity. This is why moderate wide-angles are
accepted as best for landscapes and short tele's are best for portraits.
(and 40-55mm is a nice all-purpose compromise). Many point & shoots have
lenses in the 28-42mm range because the manufacturer knows that most people
use them for tourist landscapes or for groups of people - snapshots - and
that's a better compromise.
