I use mine mostly with a normal lens. Since it's also a 2x teleconverter, the equivalent 100mm f/2.8 lens that goes to 1:1 gives comfortable enough distance from most subjects for me. I've even used it with a 35mm f/3.5 lens with excellent results, tho' the resulting 70mm f/7 requires bright light to work comfortably with.

Best to avoid long or heavy lenses - the Vivitar's helical seems to get cranky, binding the focus/magnification ring.

I've never combined it with extension tubes - don't have any. Adding close up diopters to the front doesn't accomplish much so I've used those with the Vivitar only a couple of times.

Mostly I leave it on one of the normal lenses as a handy 100mm telephoto that happens to get 1:1 macro magnification if I need it. The tricky part for me has been remembering to compensate for the light loss when using flash.

Here are a few pix, three of some custom jewelry:

And one of my ferret, Willie, who died tonight (Saturday) at age 10 or so after a bout of kidney and bladder problems. The photo shows him in happier times, being cuddled by a cute young lady who modeled for me for my first attempt at...what? Glamour...fashion...I dunno...photography of cute young ladies wearing clothes.

Doesn't demonstrate anything in particular except the versatility of the Vivitar macro focusing 2x teleconverter combined with a normal lens.

Gary Reese's tests seem to indicate this is one of the better teleconverters available - probably far better than Vivitar's standard 2x converter - and a bargain to boot. All I know ees, eet been beddy beddy good to my peektures.
