One disadvantage of the B+W is that the thin ones seem not to have outside
threads, so that threaded hoods and caps are impossible.

That's true of the Hoya SMC circ. polarizer too. But the 72 comes with a nice slip-on cap that also fits the 18mm lens very nicely.

Anybody using a 55mm or 62mm circ PL with a step up ring?

I use 55s on all my 49mm lenses. No problem with the 21.
