My take on trying to save money by using house and off-brand film is
exceedingly simple. Why go to the trouble of getting just the right camera
and just the right lenses, only to run the risk of wasting resources and
limited experiences with film that just might not live up to the potential
of the equipment? For me, film is the cheapest part of the whole
photographic equation. I don't (usually), buy pro film because I don't
always use film right away, and my limited tests have not shown any
superiority over similar consumer brands when they are available. However,
I don't really fancy doing a whole bunch of tests just to determine that
some off-brand is really almost the same as some readily available name
brand film for pennies more. This is not to disparage those who do want to
experiment with various films, but rather is a comment about what variables
I personally feel would be best changed to improve most people's
photography and enjoyment of their OM gear. Personally, my idea is to pick
1 or 2 films and then to stick with them long enough to really, really feel
that nothing more can possibly be learned without switching to something
else. I'm not at that point yet. But others may well be.
