I pretty mucf met the same fate. My only transportation as a teen-ager
was my bicycle or public transportation (or bummming rides from
friends).
Cycling was my "sport" as a teen-ager in the 70s. Commuted with a couple
buddys on El Camino about 12 miles each way to school drafting the
semi-trucks (we were pretty insane). Rode many century rides, including
an early 70s Davis Double, raced criteriums and some track (I was more
of a sprinter than distance rider). I loved it. I also shot a lot of
bicycle racing photos back then with my OM-1 (OM content). I was first
scared away from riding by the cars when I was about 18. The only thing
I managed to keep from back then is the Reynolds 531 frame I designed
and built with my metal-worker cousin's help...
When the mountain bike boom hit my ex-wife and I got mountain bikes and
we rode some. In the mid-90s I got the bug back in a big way and started
riding a lot. Lost a bunch of weight and was in perhaps the best shape
of my adult life. Went nuts buying new hardware starting with a used
Kestrel road bike that I proceded to crack in only 700 miles. While it
was at the (thankfully local) facotry getting fixed, repainted, and
updated with an EMS fork I plunked down another grand or so for the
"Italian Stalion" aka all Dura Ace 8/STI Bottechia with two sets of
wheels (which throwback that I am I just had to ride on the sew-up race
set of wheels). Once back the Kestrel was like new and beautiful and I
gave it to my wife. She has ridden in like twice but refuses to give it
up because she loves it and wants to get into riding it someday.
Meanwhile the Bottechia is on "loan" to an old friend who still rides
and had a problem with his old Holdsworth frame cracking on him.
This leads me to a bikes for OM stuff thought ;-)
The Bottechia (I'll have to verify size but recall it is a 52cm) is up
for grabs unless my friend wants to buy it...offers?
I have this ancient Cinelli, huge frame, all original from the early
60s. Needs restoration but is sound and collectable (did I mention it is
huge?). All old Campy Record (triple chain ring crankset) with Weinmann
Center Pulls (pre-Campy brakes built bike). Only thing that is
semi-modern is that someone replaced the sew-up rims with clinchers. OM
trades for this dust collector in storage would be more than welcome ;-)
Thought I would toss it out there since there seem to be so many
cyclists on the list.
Keepers include my wife's mountain bike and her dust collecting Kestrel
along with my old Ritchie mountain bike that I love and is all I'll
really ride anymore. All other bicycles are up for grabs.
