If blood and gore don't sell, then why do media executives respond to
criticism of sensationalistic, bloody, gory coverage with "But the readers
want it, and if we don't do it, we don't sell papers/bring in the rating"?

This is the Woodward and Bernstein wannabe school of journalism: pander to
the public while proclaiming only the highest intentions. I don't buy it for
a moment, and neither should anyone else.

One other consideration, even if nearly all media photographers don't honor
it: Don't show the patient's face. The story's not there. If they're hurt,
their expression is going to be one of pain and suffering, and by recording
it, you're showing nothing new and dragging the patient through the public
consciousness when he least needs it.
