Just showing my ignorance on the newest Epsons!  I was told that they use
some kind of a dye now instead of water based ink, and I was under the
impression the 870/1270 and 2000 used the same.  My friend is getting the
2000.  I considered the 1270 - but I can buy a lot of enlargements for $500!

It is just the opposite. Epson traditional used dye based ink and the 870/1270/2000 use pigmented inks.

I thought the problem with the 870/1270 print longevity problems had to do with Epson's paper formulation which apparently absorbs pollutants from the air and zaps the color in the ink. The last I saw they were working on a new paper.
