LASIK is something I've given quite a bit of thought to the last few
years. I'll give you my pros and cons as I see them. BTW, I've worn glasses
since the age of 11 (currently 46) but still remember being able to see
clearly (oddly now that presbyopia is setting I can only read my watch by
removing my glasses). Currently I'm up to -6.00 diopters in each eye. I wore
contacts for a number of years, but my eyes no longer like them. Sorry I
digress.
PROS Lasik surgery seems to work very well. Both in published data and
anecdotally people achieve very good correction and are able to give up
glasses for distance vision. The recovery time is pretty short with little
discomfort ( particularly with the type of surgery in which a flap of the
cornea is raised and the underlying lens tissue is shaped by the laser to
the correct refractive index).
CONS Most patients have a temporary need for "artificial tears" for a few
weeks after surgery. Probably has something to do with the cutting of fine
nerve fibers in the cornea. Rarely this condition is long-lasting and the
"tears" are required for many months. Extreme cases last over a year. The
majority of patients see halos around bright lights at night. If your myopia
is progressive, you will continue to develop nearsightedness and eventually
will again require glasses.

archives and had to uns*ubscribe in May, so I'm a bit out of the loop. In
any case, does anybody have any comments on LASIK (I think this is your
area of expertise Susan, right?)
It seems to that there are three basic groups of people when it comes to
vision: 1) those who have always been able to see 2) those who have worn
glasses so long they don't remember what it is like to see 3) those, like
me, who remember what it is like to be able to read the watch on their
wrist without glasses. (I'm currently -4.75 diopters and holding)
The response I get from the first group is usually something like, "I would
never risk my only pair of eyes on any type of surgery." The second group
tends to not have much of an opinion because their glasses have always been
glued to their face. I won't speak for third group and instead say that I
long to see again. I remember well what it is like to see, how liberating
contacts can be, and aweful it is to be told that I should not wear
contacts more than a couple times a week for only a few hours a day (GPC,
for those who care...and through no fault of my own. I cleaned and enzymed
my contacts religiously)
So really what I want to know is if their are any OM users with
testimonials?
Are there any side effects, like difficulty reading viewfinder
information
(as though I can it all right now)? I loathe trying to see everything
through the viewfinder under ideal conditions. Let's not talk about when I
try to use the 20/2 Macro on bellows and try to focus while excluding
extraneous light. Next thing ya' know my glasses are all dirty and all
hope is lost. I'm sure many of you can relate.
If for some reason I decide not to get LASIK, I've got $3000 to blow on
Zuikos! The top of my wish list in the 90/2 macro, 35 shift, and a
super-wide angle (18 or 21)!
