I generally use beanbags rather than a tripod with long lenses that don't have tripod sockets, tho' my longest lens is a 300mm. And, yeh, I use the shutter release button rather than cable release. Sometimes I prop the camera/lens against a tree or other handy object. But not because this technique is superior to a 'pod and cable release - it's just more comfortable and convenient. I just use the same techniques I learned in the military in rifle competition - breath control, making an effective muscular/skeletal platform. Chances are my results don't compare with a good tripod, but they're good enough for me and beat the heck out of missing a shot due to futzing with too much gear. I'd use a rifle stock and sling if I wasn't worried about looking like a sniper. 0

I note that Olympus suggests, for long lenses: "When using a tripod,
hold the camera steady with both hands and press the shutter release
with the ball of finger, not with the cable release." ... Has
anyone done tests, comparing Olympus's recommended hand-held method
with the use of cable release or self-timer, to see which gives the
most reliable stability?
