Nevetheless, Olympus recommends the hand-holding method (with tripod,
of course) for the 600mm and other super-teles.

Granted, that's the problem with a rigid support. Some manufacturers,
in the past, have provided a shoulder stock for use with some of their
longer lenses (e.g. Zenit, Leica). Same priciple as a rifle: the user
needs to be able to change point of aim quickly but still needs to be
able to maintain a steady hold. I don't know whether a shoulder stock
is available that would be suitable for use with long Zuikos but it
would be quite a practical idea, IMHO. I have heard, though, that it
can be dangerous for a photog to be so equipped in a war zone!
