If you're using a pie tin, then the needle from an insulin syringe would
produce an almost invisible hole (they're very tiny). They are also
available over the counter (no prescription) in the US.  They might ask you
questions to confirm you're a diabetic, but just walk up with confidence and
say:

"I'd like a ten-pack of B-D Ultrafine 3/10 CC please"

and they'll sell them to you.

Would it help to use a hollow needle, e.g. from the smallest available
size syringe? Or would even that be too thick?
