Hello Bob,
The Olympus Varimagni Finder is an excellent piece of equipment. There
are four primary reasons for obtaining one (not in any order):
(1) brighter viewfinder image (great for astrophotography)
(2) 1.2x and 2.5x magnification
(3) allows easy viewing at odd camera positions
(4) increases your Olympus collection size
I use mine exclusively for astrophotography with my OM-1 and it makes
a world of difference ... wouldn't want to be without it! I don't use it
for macro work as I use <flame suit ON> another brand <flame suit OFF>
of camera for this ... but a magnifying angle finder certainly does make
it easier.

Have fun,
  -Nick
