If it has been sitting for a long time the lube for the zoom action may be
dried up
a bit and need to be redistributed for a smooth action. Zooming the lens
repeatedly
will often do this, you may not even need to service the lens. If this does not
work
then the lens may need to be partially dissasembled and relubed.
