Just watched an MIT physics prof demonstrate that with large handheld 
polarizer filters and a light source.  By "sideways", Hans is saying at 90 
degrees, or right angle, to you, as opposed to shooting straight at the sun 
(don't do that -- eye damage may result) or straight away from it.  Hence the 
term "polarized" light, as in polar coordinate system.  You should see the 
greatest filter effect at 90 degrees to the angle of the sun's rays.

Somebody correct me if I botched that.
