Probably THE single safest place to be in an earthquake in the western
hemisphere. 2/3 of the mass of the Space Needle is below the surface. It
has a MASSIVE concrete pour under it, and is WELL anchored.

Otherwise, there are some serious injuries, a few critical, a few small
landslides and rockslides, and a few older buildings damaged, mostly in the
Pioneer and SODO district of Seattle, near the new baseball and football
stadiums (which is filled-in tide flats and like jello). Nothing major
reported, so far.

I just got home from work. No power. Traffic lights are off all over.
Traffic is nuts. EVERYBODY left for home at once. It's like the Friday
before the 4th of July or Labor Day.

When I walked in, my bathroom door was closed by a large dressing mirror
which was behind it, but fell. All my desk drawers were open, and VHS tapes
in the living room fell over.... it was rocking & rolling in here.

Just like my year of isolated duty with the Coast Guard on Adak, AK! Talk
about seismically active!

This was a good wake-up call for those who don't take earthquake preparedness
seriously. We have all the potential for disaster that San Francisco does,
PLUS Mt. Rainier and her sisters.
