Thanks, Mike. Actually, my immediate problem seems to be what to do with
130 odd emails every time I log onto the net! I'll obviously have to
develop a new browsing strategy.
On the subject of collecting may I say that I've been there, done that,
there's a tee-shirt somewhere. After a happy relationship with a TLR
Rolleiflex my first new 35mm camera was in 1960. On the Great Australian
O/S trip to Europe I bought my M3 Leica (60 pounds Stg.) in the duty-free
port of Aden. Apart from picking up a new 135mm f4.5 Hectar in Germany and
swapping the original (and soft) 50mm f1.5 Summarit for a new 50mm f3.5
Elmar the rest of that make's bits have been secondhand. And they're all
still as silky-smooth as when they were new.
But 'round 1983 I bought a 35mm Mayima ZE-X with 50mm f1.2 and 28mm f2.8
Mamiya-Sekors. That of course was the time when zoom lenses were becoming
popular so I bought four Osawa's from 35-105 up to 60-300. They were pretty
disappointing in terms of sharpness but useful for record shots etc. It
made me concentrate on fixed-focus lenses the Sekors proving to be of
excellent quality in every way. It was a shame that Mamiya didn't persevere
with the 35mm format. The ZE-X has a lot of the qualities I perceive in the
Oly's.
Now when I get the fidgets re a new lens I tend to go to my copy of 'Henri
Cartier-Bresson' in The Aperture History of Photography and re-visit his
opening paragraph in the Introduction, viz:
"Photography has not changed since its origin except in its technical
aspects, which for me are not a major concern."
Its probably a bit pretentious for me to quote the great man but I've
always been impressed by the fact that he only used a 50mm lens and
reputably always printed the complete area of the negative. Having said
that I would admit that I derive great pleasure in fiddling with gear and
if it wasn't for the menacing hover of 'she who must be obeyed' the photo
cupboard would be full to bursting!
