It's all user preference. SOme people just like a wider angle lens as their
primary view. It's not better, or worse than a 35mm FL.

Generally though, IMO, the "public" doesn't know how to use wide angle lenses
as their only option, it would be too wide for most P&S uses. When I looked
for a P&S for my wife, I purposely included only those cameras with a 28mm as
the lower-end focal length of a zoom and ended up with a Pentax with a 28-90mm
lens. She uses the 28mm setting a lot for group pictures. 35mm is just not
wide enough for most interior kid and family pictures that most people take.

You can go wider. Ricoh introduced a fixed lens camera with their
excellend-quality 21mm lens, the GR21. I can't find any prices though. Expect
it to be a $700+ MSRP camera.

Can anybody explain why or what advantage there is in mounting a 28 mm lens
on a compact rangefinder instead of the more common 35 mm? I know that there
are also many brands mounting a 28 mm, but just want to know better how to
make better use of it. I just bought an XA 4 in excellent user condition.
