12 NiCd cells

The only NiCd's that I know of which will fit are the 1/3 AA size cells, which
is exactly what Olympus used.  For NiMH the flat "button" cells that Frank
provided a picture of work.

NiMH's work fine for a few frames, but they seem to drop off substantially
after that.  The best choice for fast continuous shooting seems to be the
M.18V control Grip with it's 12 alkaline batteries (or the M.AC Control Box,
but that has very limited uses).  An MD2 just flies with either of those.

Never solder directly to a cell, the heat will damage it.  The proper way
is to spot weld the cells together.  Since most of us don't happen to have a
spot welder handy, make sure that you get cells that have tabs spot welded to
them.  You can then safely solder the tabs together.
