The edges of inner elements are painted black, sometimes this paint gets
damaged and starts to bubble up. I've seen it as white spots. One cause
can be moisture damage.

Subject: [OM] Lens fungus?

| I've recently acquired a 50/1.4 (it was part of a larger deal) with
| something odd inside it. I've seen a number of lenses with fungus before,
| and this looks nothing like that. The lens elements themselves appear to
be
| totally clear. As a matter of fact on the first two inspections I made of
| this lens, I didn't notice any problem with it. I've also shot a test roll
| using it and the pictures come out fine.
|
| Whatever this stuff is, it looks a lot like something that condensed out
| inside, of all things (as a matter of fact, at first I thought it was
| exactly that--internal condensation). It's pure white in color and opaque.
| As far as I can tell, it's all on the inside of the lens barrel, only, and
| only between the 1st couple of elements of the lens (or maybe all ahead of
| the diaphragm, it's quite difficult to tell for sure).
|
| Anyway, do you think it's worth it to try and clean this lens? Is this one
| that's relatively easy to disassemble to clean? I worried that if I ignore
| it, it may well get worse, assuming it *is* something alive.
