FYI, as far as I know, typical "priority mail" postage from anywhere, to
anywhere within the USA is either $3.50 (1lb or under and fitting in a
priority mail envelope) or $3.95 up to 2lbs (a few more packaging options
here I believe). Some restrictions on both those methods apply, I know, but
for the most part, that's typical. In any event, there's a shipping
calculator at www.usps.gov that allows you to quite closely determine the
rates.

I tend to avoid auctions where it's obvious that the seller is gouging the
"shipping costs".

No national name on the stamps is a right claimed, I believe, because they
invented the idea of stamps. A quaint tradition, I think. Oh and the author
Trollope invented the post box, I've heard, as part of his day job.
I've not had any problems with UK correspondents either but most of the
transactions I've been involved in have been with the US or Canada. What
has surprised me is the inconsistency of postage requested by US sellers
(apart from some dealers and their 'handling' fees, a whole new level of
added profit margin!) Thus, one day I'll get quite a large 'small packet'
with a $1.70 stamp on it and the next a smaller packet with a $6 stamp on
it - this happened last week.
I just successfully bid around $15 for a flat, Beseler 23C neg carrier and
the guy wants $10 to post it - this seems excessive (and I told him so) as
I can post a 750gram package (i.e.medium size lens) for this, including
buying the box. I sent a similar sized item to a US buyer the other day for
less than US$2 - including the cost of the padded bag. It's ignorance I
think - they believe anything the Post Office tells them and cheerfully
stick on a blizzard of stamps at my expense. One of those unimportant but
very irritating niggles.
Now I suppose I should ask what *Bay policy is on disputes over shipping
charges, hey? :-(
