At 20:45 4/6/01, I wrote about John's Dirt Cheap Shutter Tapering Tester:
If it changes width:

Narrower toward the bottom right: shutter is tapering
(opening curtain is slower than closing curtain)

Wider toward the bottom right, shutter is doing the opposite
(opening curtain is faster than closing curtain)

This won't tell you how much different it is, just whether you have a noticeable problem, but it's *much* cheaper than buying a shutter tester.

Oooh . . . forgot to mention:
If you start at 1/125th and change shutter speeds by one stop increments, the apparent width of the strip with each increase in shutter speed should be about half that of the previous one. Not horribly accurate, but can tell you if higher shutter speeds are way off. This is _only_ a relative measure and very approximate based on the viewer's judgement of what appears to be half or twice as wide.
