I suspect it's because the "2-series" screens have a finer matte that doesn't allow differentiation between in/out of focus as easily as a coarser one. Combine that with the deeper DOF of an f/3.5~4.5 lens.

I use a 2-13 in the OM-4 which has the micro-prism ring and split image. No problem using the micro-prism ring, especially with proper dioptric correction on the viewfinder. I know when mine is in focus very quickly and find myself using the ring much more than the split image. As with any slower lens (starting about f/4) it does get tougher in low light.
