One of the major contributors to the OED was an American Civil War veteran
in an English insane asylum. His story is told in "The Surgeon of
Crowthorne", published in USA as "The Professor and the Madman", by Simon
Winchester, (an old schoolfriend of mine). Its a great yarn.
