Hi Kieth,
               The "MD" stands for motor drive. There is cover on the
bottom plate which will reveal a gear underneath. The gear couples the
winding mechanism to an eternal drive unit. Olympus made a winder1 and
winder2 and a couple of motor drive units that can attach to your camera.
