OK, I see the light.

Yup, a coop approach, like The Leica Manual 15th edition, published by
Morgan and Morgan, is the only way. There is too much research for any
one author to handle, plus too much existing and privately held
knowledge for a single author to be able to publish.

It also helps solve the problem of product photos. It would be a chore
for a single author to secure all the necessary photos.

One of the reasons for competing books in other systems is that single
authors have information voids that beg to be filled by others. You end
up having to get all the books just to cover the voids.  Fill them up
front with a multi-authored text and it can be quickly established as
the bible on the subject.
